Hello Martin, How I came to possess the Ampex recorder: I worked for 39 years as an television engineer at WXYZ-TV in Detroit. Up until 1986 the station was owned by the American Broadcasting Company. The station known as "Broadcast House" was also home to WXYZ-AM & FM. In the late 1960's and early 70's ABC transitioned from vacuum tube to solid state equipment. The employees were allowed to take any of the old equipment they desired. A Director by the name of Melvin Wasserman acquired the recorder, and upon his retirement gave it to me. This unit was used for radio broadcasts both locally and to the entire ABC radio network from time to time. hope this information was helpful. Richard Schaaf

This Ampex 351 was donated to our collection by John King (brother-in-law) who acquired it from a radio station in Dallas, Texas. John was the City of Dallas' communications director and also travelled around Texas repairing radio station gear. This unit and its remote were restored by Phantom Productions in 2010. View video

Ampex PR260
While many Ampex and other reel tape recorders went to recording studios and broadcast stations, a large percentage went to data recording (especially Ampex & Magnecord) . We provide this Ampex/Teac PR-26 0using 1/2" tape and running at speeds from 15/16/ to 30 ips, as an example of some of the data recorders. This is a closed loop, however we don't have much additional sales info. There is an Ampex PR-260/280 manual in the collection for reference. Ampex Data Brochure
